A $20 million competitive grants program to drive investment in innovative water use for agriculture has been launched as part of the Water for Food program.

Department of Water Director General Mike Rowe attended the announcement and said the Water Irrigation Innovation Grants program made possible by Royalties for Regions will encourage new investment to support local industry development in regional, remote and rural areas facing water challenges.

“The project will enable regions often overlooked for new agriculture potential to engage in growth and innovative solutions,” Mr Rowe said.

“The grant scheme will run for four years, providing up to $5 million each year through two funding rounds and will encourage industry-led ideas and solutions to optimise the use of the State’s water assets to further drive economic growth.

“Proposals will need to be proponent driven and will need to demonstrate the capacity to leverage investment and how the project will benefit the community and the economy.

“Grant funding will be available for the development of feasibility and market studies, trial and demonstration projects and infrastructure for proven projects.”

Applications are scheduled to open in May 2017, but in the meantime please register your interest in the upcoming grants scheme by emailing waterforfood@water.wa.gov.au.
